Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has made his rap debut with a guest feature on Tech N9ne's new single, "Face Off."
After conquering the wrestling ring, box office, TV ratings and even tequila sales, the "Jungle Cruise" star, 49, is venturing into music as he joins Tech N9ne, King Iso and Joey Cool on the track "Face Off." The song comes off of Tech N9ne's new album, "ASIN9NE," which dropped Friday via Strange Music.
"It's about tribe, it's about power, we stay hungry, we devour. Put in the work. Put in the hours, and take what's ours. Black and Samoan in my veins, my culture bangin' with Strange. I change the game so what's my motherf--kin' name," Johnson raps in the song.
"Desecration, defamation, if you wanna bring it to the masses," he continues. "Face to face now we escalatin' when I have to put boots to a--es. Mean on ya' like a dream when I'm rumblin', you're gonna scream, 'Mama.' So bring drama to the king Brahma (Then what?), comin' at ya' with extreme mana."
During an interview with Variety, Johnson revealed that he has always been a big music fan. "Anytime in my movies when I can implement some musical elements, I always love doing that," he shared.
But while he has been offered many opportunities to feature on songs over the years, this is the first time he's actually taken an artist up on it. "It just has to feel right," he explained.
The "Jumanji" actor previously appeared on his friend Wyclef Jean's 2000 song, "It Doesn't Matter," shouting his titular catchphrase but not rapping. But when Johnson received a message from Tech N9ne on Instagram, he instantly knew it was the right time.
"When Tech texted me, I knew I would make this work. We're aligned, just in terms of our work ethic and desire," Johnson told Variety.
Johnson has been sharing Tech N9ne's music on social media for years. The two had first met on the set of the NFL comedy "Ballers."
"The biggest star in the world said something back to me! You know what I’m sayin'? I am hyped. We are all hyped!" Tech N9ne said during a phone call with the outlet.
Tech N9ne told the outlet that he wanted to feature a fighter on the track because he envisioned the single to be a hype-up anthem that can be played in stadiums or gyms.
"This is an energy song. This is going to get people pumped up to lift weights, pumped up for fights, pumped up for the game. Period," he explained. "And what better person? Not Conor McGregor. I don't know him. I know The Rock."
Discussing his future in the music industry, Johnson said he is open to more collaborations with Tech N9ne or other hip hop artists.
"If the song is right and if the collaboration feels real and authentic, I would love that," Johnson said. "I would love to do a repeat with Tech N9ne and Strange Music. If I had the opportunity to collaborate with another artist out there — hip hop artists, blues artists, outlaw country artists — then let’s talk and let’s figure it out. If I could rap about the right words that feel real and authentic to me, then I’ll be happy to break out that Teremana, take a few big swigs and jump back into the studio."
