'Elden Ring' Will Showcase FromSoftware, George RR Martin Worldbuilding In Fantasy RPG Game
Bandai Namco released an official trailer of “Elden Ring” which is another FromSoftware project at E3 2019. This project is confirmed to be the game that award-winning novelist George R. R. Martin has worked on. Similar to other FromSoftware titles, “Elden Ring” sets itself up to be another action RPG title with fantasy themes.
“Elden Ring” features many visuals similar the “Dark Souls” series, as seen in its trailer. Armored knights, swords, desolate battlefields and an unwelcoming world awaits its players.
Director Hidetaka Miyazaki and Martin confirmed that “Elden Ring” would be a quality fantasy RPG title in a report from RockPaperShotgun. For now, the trailer revealed only vague hints about its world and too little about most of its gameplay.
Similar to FromSoftware’s “Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice,” the “Elden Ring” trailer barely had any hints about its main character. In the previous FromSoftware game, the trailers mostly showed the creation of the main character’s prosthetic arm. The recent trailer showed a few characters which could potentially be the game’s main character.
So far, a female knight reattaching her prosthetic arm, a knight driving his spear through a monster, a kneeling knight being engulfed by energy from inside his armor, and a smith forming large earthly cracks on his back could be this game’s main character.
While the trailer leaves many viewers and fans guessing, the developers on-board this project are big names in their respective industry. Director Hidetaka Miyazaki has been known for his work with “Dark Souls,” “Bloodborne,” and “Sekiro:Shadows Die Twice” which games infamous for its difficult yet rewarding gameplay.
Meanwhile, George R. R. Martin is the author of “A Song Of Ice and Fire” book series which have been popular and the main basis of the recently concluded “Game of Thrones” TV Series. Previously, the author confirmed that he worked on a Japanese video game recently but didn’t provide any details. Leaks also said that "Elden Ring" would be his project prior to its official reveal this E3 2019.
The Miyazaki-Martin combo is untested but many fans of their work are already waiting on their next move for “Elden Ring.” So far, the strength of combining Miyazaki and Martin in a project could be on the worldbuilding of this “Elden Ring” as Miyazaki’s subtle style of explaining the world and Martin’s success in handling a complex world with many characters.
