Elisabeth Moss vs. Leah Remini On Scientology: ‘Handmaid’s Tale’ Actress Takes To Instagram
“Handmaid’s Tale” star and Scientologist Elisabeth Moss explained the difference between Scientology and Gilead, the fictional place the hit Hulu series takes place, when a fan questioned her affiliation with the Ron L. Hubbard created religion. Moss rarely opened up about being a Scientologist on Instagram, but made an exception for an inquisitive fan.
“Love this adaptation so much,” an Instagram user wrote Wednesday, referring to the small screen adaption of the book. “Question though, does it make you think twice about Scientology? Both Gilead and Scientology both believe that all outside sources (aka news) are wrong or evil… it’s just very interesting.”
Moss kindly responded to the fan. “That’s actually not true at all about Scientology,” the actress said. “Religious freedom and tolerance and understanding the truth and equal rights for every race, religion and creed are extremely important to me. The most important things to me probably. And so Gilead and [‘The Handmaid’s Tale’] hit me on a very personal level. Thanks for the interesting question!”
The IG user was satisfied with Moss’ answer. “Thank you for taking the time to try and explain a little,” the Instagram user wrote back. “Either way, you do you and imma do me and if that makes us happy I supposed that's all that matters.”
The post showed Moss looking off to the side and smiling. “Last ‘Handmaids Tale’ Season 1 event until the Emmys! Thank you for coming out everyone last night, your love and support of the show means more to us than I'll ever be able to express in words. Truly,” she wrote. “And now we get to go work on bringing you season 2!!! Which by the way is going to blow your minds.” The post was liked more than 33,000 times by her 282,000 followers.
Leah Remini, who famously left the Church of Scientology, said Moss isn’t “allowed” to talk to her since Remini left the religion and has openly condemned it.
“Elisabeth Moss believes that she can't talk to me,” Remini, 47, told The Hollywood Reporter in a profile Wednesday. “There's a thing in Scientology called ‘acceptable truth.’ It means you only say what's acceptable to the public. But she believes that I'm an antisocial personality — because I've spoken out against Scientology. So she isn't allowed to talk to me. And me knowing that, I wouldn't put her in the awkward position.”
In the past, Moss said Scientology “helped” her get through tough times, but didn’t elaborate. “I think that for me it’s one thing that has helped me at times, and it’s kind of as simple as that,” Moss told The Telegraph in 2012.
Scientology aside, Moss is excited for Season 2 of “The Handmaid’s Tale.” She wouldn’t give fans any hints about what to expect. “I tell people just give up trying to guess, which is what I wanted. Even my guesses weren't the case,” Moss, 35, said at a panel in New York Monday. “Wherever you think [it’s] going to go, it's just not going to go that way.”
