The winners for the 2020 Primetime Emmy Awards have been unveiled and it was “Schitt’s Creek” that dominated the virtual event this year. The show created history with its sweep of seven trophies and engraved its name into the history books.
With seven victories on Sunday and two additional accolades at the Creative Arts Emmys last week, the show has created a massive record for the most wins in a single season for a comedy series, The Hollywood Reporter revealed.
The record was previously held by “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” The show won eight awards in 2018 and came back to win the same number of trophies in 2019 as well.
"Schitt's Creek" won accolades in various categories like best comedy series, best writing for a comedy series, best directing, best casting, and best contemporary costumes.
Apart from them, Eugene Levy took home the trophy in the best actor in a comedy series category while Catherine O’Hara won the best actress for her impeccable acting skills in the series.
It was Levy’s first-ever Emmy award for acting. He edged out stars like Anthony Anderson (“Black-ish”), Don Cheadle (“Black Monday”), Ted Danson (“The Good Place”), Michael Douglas (“The Kominsky Method”), and Ramy Youssef (“Ramy”) to win the trophy.
On the other hand, O’Hara beat Rachel Brosnahan (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”), Christina Applegate (“Dead To Me”), Linda Cardellini (“Dead To Me”), Issa Rae (“Insecure”), and Tracee Ellis Ross (“Black-ish”) for the award.
Similarly, Levy’s son Daniel won two trophies on the same night. He was adjudged the best supporting actor for the series while he received another award for writing the last season. The show continued its domination at the star-studded virtual ceremony when Annie Murphy picked up the trophy for best-supporting actress.
By winning four accolades in the acting category, the show has also become the first comedy series to emerge victorious in all the main acting categories in a single season. Interestingly, the show never won a single Emmy for its previous five seasons.
The final season will be making its way to Netflix in October 2020. The streaming giant, which already carries the first five seasons, will stream the final season starting on Oct. 7.
