Epic Games Store Adds More Free Games, Includes Surprise For 'Sonic The Hedgehog' Fans

The Epic Games Store has added more titles to its Free Games promotion, including a massive surprise to "Sonic the Hedgehog" fans. The digital storefront has also announced the games it would give away for free next week.

This week's lineup is all about speed—but with a retro twist. Beginning today, users can claim their free copies of "Sonic Mania," a game which the digital storefront strategically picked to probably join in the 30th-anniversary celebration of the iconic Sonic the Hedgehog. "Horizon Chase Turbo," which is "a tribute to classic arcade racers, is also available up for grabs.

The Epic Games Store took to Twitter to announce which games it would give away for free this week.

Fans can claim their free "Sonic Mania" and "Horizon Chase Turbo" until 8 a.m. PT or 11 a.m. ET on July 1.

The digital storefront also revealed its next free title, "The Spectrum Retreat."

The game will be free for all users on the Epic Games Store's promotion page starting 8 a.m. PT or 11 a.m. ET on July 1. Interestingly, it's also the date of the game's official release on the platform.

Fans have until July 8 to score the title, which will take them on a first-person, color-coded puzzle adventure.

"Sonic Mania" is a retro-inspired Sonic title, which launched in 2017. It became the highest-rated installment of the series and was developed by passionate Sonic fan game devs and ROM hackers. The game enables players to surge their way through a range of 2 D levels and remixed classic titles as "Tails," "Knuckles" and "Sonic." It revisits some of the most notorious locales in the franchise in a bid to defeat Eggman.

Meanwhile, "Horizon Chase Turbo" is an arcade racer inspired by old-school classic games. It is packed with 148 tracks that players need to conquer with or without the help of friends. This fun racing game celebrated for its nostalgic feel, which is a nod to arcade classics.
