Floyd Mayweather’s Next Fight: Opponent, Date, Ticket Update For June Bout
Floyd Mayweather’s next fight is finally on after the boxer has stayed away from the ring for a few years. The 44-year-old announced Tuesday that he will face Youtuber Logan Paul at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium on June 6.
Mayweather vs. Paul will take place on Showtime, potentially headlining the biggest pay-per-view of 2021. Tickets for the event will go on sale next week.
The bout won’t affect Mayweather’s perfect 50-0 professional boxing record since it’s technically going to be an exhibition fight. The Athletic has previously reported that Mayweather can weigh up to 160 pounds and Paul will be allowed to weigh 190 pounds.
Mayweather has won world championships in five different weight classes.
Picking a YouTuber as his next opponent is a natural progression for Mayweather. The former world champion last fought on Dec. 31, 2018, when he embarrassed kickboxer Tenshin Nasukawa with a first-round knockout in their exhibition fight.
The 2017 super-fight against UFC star Conor McGregor was Mayweather’s last professional boxing match. The PPV headlined by Mayweather and McGregor generated 4.4 million buys, nearly matching the record 4.6 million PPVs sold for the bout between Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao in 2015.
Mayweather is eyeing another massive payday for a fight he should win with ease. Logan Paul has a 0-1 professional boxing record, having suffered a loss via split decision in 2019 against fellow YouTuber KSI.
Mayweather and Paul had been set to fight in February, but the bout was put on hold. More information about the fight, including the number of rounds and the size of the gloves allowed to be worn, is expected to be released soon.
Former champion Badou Jack will face Jean Pascal on the Mayweather-Paul undercard, according to Sports Illustrated.
Logan Paul’s brother, Jake Paul, recently headlined a PPV with former UFC fighter Ben Askren that reportedly generated well over 1 million buys.
