Former Oklahoma Teacher Hunter Day Gets Charged With Second-Degree Rape Of Minor
A married teacher in Oklahoma was arrested and charged with second-degree rape after allegedly having a sexual relationship with a male student.
According to a report in Tulsa World, a daily newspaper from Tulsa, Oklahoma, 22-year-old Hunter Joanne Day was arrested Wednesday, Nov. 15 and charged in Canadian County for second-degree rape and soliciting sex with a minor by use of technology.
Day has said to have an alleged relationship with a 16-year-old boy from her school. According to the authorities, deputies first began investigating the matter after the boy’s parents registered a complaint. Further investigation uncovered evidence including explicit text messages and nude pictures, CBS-affiliated television station, KWTV-DT reported.
Speaking about the case, Canadian County Sheriff, Chris West said: “This is a classic case of a serious breach of public trust. School teachers are entrusted to protect and educate our children, not to engage in an unlawful sexual relationship with them,” he said.
The authorities, however, have still not released the boy’s name to protect his identity. Describing the day of the arrest, police officials say that Day and the teen had planned to meet at her house, KWTV-DT reported.
Reports also state that deputies arrived at the scene and reportedly texted the teacher from the boy’s phone, saying that he had arrived to which Day reportedly replied saying that the doors were unlocked as usual. When authorities entered the house, they said that Day was sitting on the floor of her living room with candles lit and lights off. Reports suggest that she was wearing a Christmas cat T-shirt and a pair of workout shorts.
KWTV also reported that after getting busted, Day confessed to sending illegal “bra and panty” pictures to the boy and claimed that he also sent her pictures of his genitals.
Speaking about the incident Sheriff West said that criminals come from all walks of life and such incidents are not surprising anymore. “I’m no longer surprised by the people who commit these crimes because predators come from all walks of life,” he said.
The administrator from the high school was also quick to respond to Day’s case and said that Day’s records in no way indicate such a poor judgment on her part. They released a statement on Twitter saying that “the safety and well-being of our students is our number one priority”.

During a press conference on Nov. 16, Jason Simeroth, the Yukon Schools Superintendent Jason Simeroth also refused to comment on Day’s status until the investigations were completed. However, reports suggest that The Oklahoma State Department of Education will reportedly discuss Day’s certification at an executive session on Dec. 19.
Interestingly, in early October, KWTV-DT had also profiled Day about her change in career plans when she decided to get an emergency certification to become a teacher, rather than attend medical school. “I’m obviously nervous, I’ve never taught before,” Day said. A month into the job, she said, “I think I like it more than I could have anticipated,” she said, New York Post reported.
As of now, Day is imprisoned in the Canadian County Jail and her bond is set at $85,000.
