Freeform’s ‘Grown-ish’ Jokes About Meghan Markle’s Divorce, New Prince Harry Marriage
Freeform’s “Grown-ish” aired its Season 2 premiere on Wednesday, and it starts off with Zoey Johnson (Yara Shahidi) arriving at her college campus to begin her sophomore year of school. While she’s walking around, she talks directly to the camera about second tries being better than first ones — and this is when Meghan Markle’s brought up.
“Sequels. They get a bad rap, but I personally love a sequel,” Zoey starts off her monologue. “It’s the opportunity to do things bigger and better. And, no matter what the haters say, the second time around can be a lot better than the first.”
The show then moves off the college student to reveal images of some examples of sequels that are better than the originals.
Childish Gambino’s second album and Kylie Jenner’s second face are shared before Markle makes her appearance. A photo of the Duchess of Sussex with Prince Harry on their wedding day is shown, along with the words, “Meghan’s second marriage.”
The “Black-ish” spinoff is poking fun at how Markle’s first marriage to Trevor Engelson ended in divorce but that her sequel marriage to Prince Harry is better than her first union.
“Good on Meghan,” Zoey says after the image flashes. “Girl’s a princess now.”
She goes on to tie the whole thing back to who she is and where she’s at in her life now, as Season 2 begins. “And, as for me, I’m a sophomore, which means I’m wise enough to recognize my first year at Cal U was a bit rocky…this year, though, I came to win.”
It’s clear she feels that “win” is exactly what Markle did when she married Prince Harry in May.
After this “Grown-ish” episode ended, a second new one aired immediately after, and there’s another Markle mention.
“True love should feel like a fairy tale,” Ana (Francia Raisa) says to her friends. “I am Meghan Markle, and I’m looking for my Prince Harry. Hashtag ‘HappilyEverAfter.’”
Fans will have to keep watching “Grown-ish” on Freeform on Wednesdays at 8 p.m. EST to find out if more royals references are on the way.
