'Friends' Stars Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow Pay Tribute To Late James Michael Tyler
Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox and Lisa Kudrow have paid heartfelt tribute to James Michael Tyler, who died Sunday after a battle with stage 4 prostate cancer at 59. Following that the “Friends” stars took to Instagram to share their photos with Tyler in honor of their former co-star.
In her post, Aniston shared a scene from an episode of “Friends” and a headshot of Tyler’s character, Gunther. “Friends would not have been the same without you,” Aniston wrote. “Thank you for the laughter you brought to the show and to all of our lives. You will be so missed #JamesMichaelTyler,” she continued, before adding a broken heart emoji.
The scene she shared was featured in the series finale, in which Gunther, who was the manager of the Central Perk coffee shop where the eponymous friends would usually visit, finally confessed his love for Aniston’s character, Rachel.
In her tribute, Cox shared a photo of Tyler from the set of the long-running sitcom accompanied by a message honoring his memory. “The size of gratitude you brought into the room and showed every day on set is the size of the gratitude I hold for having known you,” she wrote in the caption. “Rest in peace James,” she continued, before adding a black heart emoji.
Their fellow co-star Kudrow also took to Instagram to remember Tyler, sharing a photo of the late actor and writing, “James Michael Tyler, we will miss you. Thank you for being there for us all.”
Matt LeBlanc, who played Joey on the show, also posted Tyler's pics saying, "We had a lot of laughs buddy. You will be missed. RIP my friend."
A representative of Tyler confirmed his passing on Sunday. “Michael loved live music, cheering on his Clemson Tigers, and would often find himself in fun and unplanned adventures. If you met him once you made a friend for life,” his rep wrote in a statement.
The actor was first diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2018. Last June, he guested on “Today” to open up about his illness and encourage others to get tested as early and as regularly as possible. “I’m sorry to say that I’m not with you today to announce that there’s going to be a ‘Friends’ movie. Actually, I’m here to let you know that in September 2018 I was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer, which had spread to my bones,” he had said.
