‘Game Of Thrones’ Actress Diana Rigg Dies At 82, ‘True Icon’ Remembered By Fans
Actress Dame Diana Rigg, best known by fans for roles as a Bond Girl, and in “The Avengers” and “Game of Thrones,” has died at the age of 82.
“She died peacefully early this morning. She was at home with her family who have asked for privacy at this difficult time,” her agent told BBC News.
Rigg’s extensive career saw her take on several iconic roles, including Tracy in “On Her Majesty's Secret Service” in 1969 and Emma Peel in “The Avengers” TV Series, as well as several stage roles as well. However, fans may most recently recognize her for her work as the tart-tongued Queen of Thornes, Lady Olenna Tyrell on HBO’s “Game of Thrones.”
As Tyrell, Rigg was a part of some of the show’s most iconic moments and scenes, including her character’s own death during the show’s seventh season. As she prepares to die by poison on Cersei Lannister’s (Lena Headey) orders, she confesses to Jaime (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) that she was the one who poisoned their son, Joffrey (Jack Gleeson), making the confession after ingesting the poison, and therefore making it too late for the pair to inflict a different punishment on her.
As news of her death broke, many who had the experience of getting to know her through work took to social media to share stories about her, including ones where she seemed to also be just as sharp-tongued as her “GOT” character.
“RIP Dame Diana Rigg A true icon,” one person wrote. “I met her a couple of times on ‘Game of Thrones’. I played Backgammon with her once. She called me a [expletive] for beating her. She was fantastic.”
“2 years ago I sat next to Diana Rigg at a Tonys party,” writer Mark Harris shared. “She was in ‘My Fair Lady’- at 80. She told me it was a great role because she could get tons of reading done btw scenes . Then she gave me her phone and said, ‘Find Uber on this and get me the [expletive] out of here.’ RIP to a great.”
She was also remembered for other roles as well, with many expressing sadness about the news of her death overall, with "GOT" fans seeming to take the news particularly hard.
According to Channel 4 News, Rigg’s daughter confirmed her mother died in her sleep after being diagnosed with cancer earlier in the year.
