'Game Of Thrones' Season 5 Spoilers: Watch The Sand Snakes In Action In New Behind-The-Scenes Video
“Game of Thrones” already aired a half-hour behind-the-scenes special, “Game of Thrones: A Day in the Life,” to give fans a sneak peek look at the popular series. Now HBO has released a much shorter, but even more detailed behind-the-scenes featurette – “Inside the ‘Game of Thrones’ Armory: Creating the Weapons of Dorne.” In addition to revealing how the weapons in the show’s new fantasy location were made, the two-minute video gives fans a look at some of the most anticipated new characters in action before the Season 5 premiere – the Sand Snakes.
Dorne, the homeland of Prince Oberyn Martell (Pedro Pascal), who met a gruesome end in Season 4, will be a new location in Season 5 of the HBO blockbuster series. The region will add new locations, characters and storylines to the already massive production. The most anticipated of those new characters are the illegitimate warrior daughters of Oberyn Martell – known as the Sand Snakes.
The Sand Snakes, who first appeared in the “Dance of Dragons” novel, all share the Sand name. It's the family name taken on by illegitimate children in Dorne – the same way that the North uses “Snow” (as in Jon Snow). The snake moniker is a reference to their father’s “Red Viper” nickname. The women -- Tyene Sand (Rosabell Laurenti Sellers), Nymeria Sand (Jessica Henwick) and Obara Sand (Keisha Castle-Hughes) -- are all trained warriors and will be seeking revenge for their father’s death.
In, “Inside the ‘Game of Thrones’ Armory: Creating the Weapons of Dorne,” the show’s weapons master, Tommy Dunne, highlights the different weapons of each of the deadly women. Dunne points out how Obara’s spear will be a near replica of her father’s spear from his ill-fated duel in Season 4. Nymeria’s whip, on the other hand, is a new weapon and sports an intertwining bronze snake around the handle. Finally, Tyene will utilize two daggers with Dorne’s trademark wavy blades.
The video shows the women, along with fellow new character Areo Hotah (DeObia Oparei), in action with their flashy weapons.
