George Clooney Jokes About Amal Alamuddin At Charity Event; Actors Says Wife Is 'The Smart One'

At the 2015 Golden Globes, Tina Fey targeted George Clooney with a joke about the superstar actor’s recent marriage to lawyer Amal Alamuddin. Alamuddin is a “human rights lawyer who worked on the Enron case, an adviser to Kofi Annan on Syria and was appointed to a three-person commission investigating rules of war violations in the Gaza Strip,” Fey said. “So tonight her husband is getting a lifetime achievement award.” Clooney later feigned insult at the gibe, but it seems the actor could not agree more with the comedian’s assessment, making a joke to that effect at a recent charity event in New York City.

Clooney was among the attendees at the SeriousFun Children's Network Hosts Gala at Lincoln Center -- other celebs included Meryl Streep, Danny DeVito, Tom Hanks and David Letterman – which honored the philanthropy of the late actor Paul Newman. At some point during the night, Clooney gave a speech where he joked about who had the brains in his relationship with Alamuddin.

“Since 1988, these camps have [helped] over a half-million sick kids and their families from over five, from over 50,... not 500 countries... that would be too many," Clooney said before pondering whether the statistic was correct. "There aren't that many…Are there 500 countries? My wife's the smart one."

His accomplished London-barrister wife attended Oxford University for undergrad work and then New York University Law School. She currently works at Doughty Street Chambers in London, where, according to her company profile page, she specializes in international law, human rights, extradition and criminal law. Alamuddin has worked on many high-profile cases, including representing WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange in extradition proceedings in Sweden.

So, Clooney believes his wife is the brainy one -- but he deserves credit for marrying such an impressive woman.
