According to Entertainment Tonight, Dempsey and Fink got married in 1999 and have been blessed with three children. In 2015, Fink filed for divorce from Dempsey, and the couple released a joint statement regarding their decision to go their separate ways. “It is with careful consideration and mutual respect that we have decided to end our marriage. Our primary concern remains the wellbeing of our children, and we ask with profound gratitude that you respect our family’s privacy at this very sensitive time,” they said.
The same publication noted in 2015 that Dempsey was in Daytona Beach for a racing event at the time of Fink’s divorce filing. In November 2015, Dempsey and Fink announced that they have decided to not push through with their divorce.
In May 2016, Dempsey opened up about their desire to make things work. While speaking with ES magazine, he said, “You have to work at everything. And you cannot do everything. Something has to be sacrificed.”
Dempsey also said that he sacrificed his time at the race track to be with his family more. “I’ve sort of stepped back. I’m the team owner, but time goes so quickly with my kids that I don’t want to miss that. Last year, we had a good team, and a good car, it was the right moment, where I could focus 100 percent on doing a full season. Now it’s time to put that personal philosophy into my kids, allowing them to find their goals, their passions,” he said.
Meanwhile, Dempsey exited “Grey’s Anatomy” as Dr. Shepherd in 2015. The character was killed off in Season 11. According to executive producer Shonda Rhimes, it was necessary for the character to die because it wouldn’t make sense if Shepherd would just leave Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) out of nowhere.
