‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Shonda Rhimes Teases Show’s End Linked With Ellen Pompeo, Admits Sara Ramirez’s Exit Surprised Her

“Grey’s Anatomy” showrunner Shonda Rhimes was candid during the Vulture Festival held in New York on Sunday, where she unveiled a few details from the ABC series such as her planned exit for the character Callie. Rhimes has even revealed when she foresees the show will end.

The famed television producer and writer has shared her thoughts following “Grey’s Anatomy” veteran cast member Sara Ramirez’s exit. Ramirez has played the role of Dr. Callie Torres for the past ten season of the long-running ABC medical drama. Rhimes commented that she was taken by surprise by Ramirez’s decision to leave the show. She stated that she learned of the actress’ exit “maybe three days” before Ramirez took to Twitter to announce the news, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Rhimes also described Ramirez’s character Callie’s exit from the show as “interesting.” She explained that the scene that fans saw in the “Grey’s Anatomy” season 12 finale was different from what she initially envisioned Callie’s departure to be. Avid viewers may recall that Callie was presented with the opportunity to go to New York for a new shared custody arrangement with Arizona (Jessica Capshaw). “I had a different plan going,” Rhimes admitted.

Despite her original storyline plans not being followed, Rhimes clarified that she still “felt good” about Callie’s ending. She also stated that the “Grey’s Anatomy” team was glad to be able to give Ramirez the break that she wanted. “We were able to give it to her because I love the woman and I want to do everything for her. It all worked out in that sense,” the showrunner commented.

Apart from Ramirez’s departure from “Grey’s Anatomy,” she also hinted of when loyal viewers can expect the ABC medical drama to end. Rhimes shared that the show’s end is linked to its main character Meredith, played by Ellen Pompeo. She has even revealed a “pact” she has with the actress. Rhimes stated that when Pompeo decides to leave the show, then that would mean the end for her as the series’ showrunner. “When she goes, I go,” she said.

Meanwhile, Ramirez posted an emotional message on Twitter to announce her departure from “Grey’s Anatomy.” In her social media post, she thanked ABC, as well as the show’s cast and crew members. She also described how it felt working with Rhimes for the past ten years. Ramirez also sent her love to Pompeo and the rest of the “Grey’s Anatomy” team.

“Grey’s Anatomy” aired its season 12 finale on May 19.
