Harvey Weinstein Insists Physical Encounters Were ‘Consensual’ Amid New Sexual Assault Charges
Harvey Weinstein now faces a total of 11 sexual assault counts involving five women in Los Angeles after receiving new rape charges amid his incarceration in New York.
AP News reported that the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office has charged Weinstein with three new counts of forcible oral copulation and three new counts of rape regarding two women.
Despite the new charges, a spokesperson for Weinstein, Juda Engelmayer, has denied the new allegations and all other suggestions that the film producer forced women into sexual acts.
“Harvey Weinstein has always maintained that every one of his physical encounters throughout his entire life have been consensual. That hasn’t changed. At this moment we cannot comment on the additional charges until we learn more about them,” Engelmayer said in a statement.
Meanwhile, a group known as The Silence Breakers, which consists of some of the first women to speak out against Weinstein, revealed they felt “gratified” knowing the movie mogul was being punished for his crimes.
“It takes a tremendous amount of courage to be part of a trial, and we stand in solidarity with the heroic women who have come forward to seek the justice they deserve,” the group said in a statement. “We have always said that we will not be silenced. Today’s news once again shows that our voices matter and have been heard.”
Weinstein was sentenced to 23 years in a New York prison, but Los Angeles prosecutors are working to have him extradited to face his crimes on the west coast.
Weinstein’s next extradition hearing is scheduled for Dec. 11. If he is convicted in California, he could face up to 140 years to life in prison.
