‘How To Get Away With Murder’ Season 1 Spoilers: Who Killed Sam? Killer Revealed In Episode 9, ‘Kill Me, Kill Me, Kill Me’
“How to Get Away with Murder” Season 1, episode 9, was the one audiences had been waiting for since the pilot revealed that the students killed Sam (Tom Verica). The episode finally made sense of all the flashbacks and revealed just who killed the husband of Annalise (Viola Davis).
The episode picked up with Annalise and Sam’s confrontation about another lie. He admitted that he lied about the pregnancy of Lila (Megan West). He knew all along, but he didn’t want Annalise to have evidence against him.
“You lied so much your words mean nothing to me,” Annalise said. “You mean nothing to me.”
She threatened to call 911, but he knocked the phone out of her hand. He said he wouldn’t leave until she talked to him. Annalise decided if they were going to talk, she would hurt him. She revealed that she had an affair, and Sam called her a hypocrite. She taunted him with her relationship until he threw her against the wall with his hands around her throat.
“Go ahead. Kill me, kill me, kill me!”Annalise shouted.
“You want the truth? You’re nothing but a piece of a--,” Sam said. He told her she was worthless and he only wanted her for easy sex when they first met. He degraded her until she left the house.
Michaela (Aja Naomi King) stopped by Annalise and Sam’s house to turn in the trophy and said that she would wait for Annalise to return. Rebecca (Katie Findlay) came in just after her, and Sam caught her going up the stairs. He thought it was too suspicious that they both showed up at the same time.
Rebecca told Michaela to call Wes (Alfred Enoch) and ran into Sam’s room with the USB Nate (Billy Brown) gave her. Sam immediately started yelling that he would call the cops if she didn’t unlock the door. She was still downloading his phone backup to the USB when Sam busted the door open. Rebecca locked herself in the bathroom while Michaela called Wes.
Wes told the group that Rebecca was trying to prove Sam killed Lila. Connor (Jack Falahee) didn’t believe him at first, but Laurel (Karla Souza) thought he was worth listening to. Once Michaela called, they raced to get to the Keatings’ house even faster.
Rebecca was still in the bathroom when the group got there. Wes got her to open the door, and she returned Sam’s laptop. “We’ll leave now. Just let us go,” Wes said.
They started to walk slowly and Sam tackled Rebecca. When Michaela physically tried to stop him, he fell over the railing down to the ground floor.
“You killed him, Michaela,” Connor said.
But Sam wasn’t dead yet. They were arguing over whether they should call the cops and how they could go to jail when they turned around to find Sam trying to strangle Rebecca. Then Wes hit him in the head with the trophy. Wes killed Sam Keating.
Wes didn’t seem concerned about the fact that he just killed a man. He carried a shocked Rebecca up to the bathroom to clean her up while Connor puked in the kitchen. Rebecca thanked him for what he did.
After she was checked into the motel, she started saying, “He wanted to kill me. I had no other choice. I had to kill him or he was going to kill me. I saw the trophy sitting there. I hit him in the head.”
It was a fake confession that she wanted to use. She couldn’t let Wes take the fall, but Wes wouldn’t let her go to jail either. He went back to the house and grabbed the trophy. “I’m so sorry,” he said to Sam’s dead body.
He brought the trophy to the woods where they decided to move the body and use the bonfire as an alibi. They went back to the house where Laurel washed off the trophy and made sure Michaela didn’t call her boyfriend. Any calls would place them at the scene of the crime, and their alibi was the bonfire.
After running out on her argument with Sam, Annalise went to Nate. He invited her inside. She told him he was right. She believed Sam killed Lila. “He’s your husband. He messed with your head. We would’ve all done the same thing,” he said.
Annalise asked if she was a terrible person and Nate didn’t have an answer for her. However, he was willing to comfort her with sex. She left him while he was asleep in bed and seemingly went home to an empty house.
She left Sam a voicemail. “So I’m asking you right now -- no, begging -- please forgive me for what I said,” she pleaded. “I didn’t mean any of it and I know you didn’t either. … I don’t want things to end this way. … I love you and I need you. So please come home, Sam.”
The one member of the Keating Five outside of the crime still had an interesting night. “How To Get Away With Murder” viewers already knew Asher (Matt McGorry) hooked up with Bonnie (Liza Weil), but the episode showed how she ended up there. Bonnie met a guy in a bar and they started to hook up at a hotel, but it seemed that she left before they got too far and called Asher. “I might be drunk but I know what I want, when I want it,” Bonnie said. “So get over here.” Thus ensued some hilariously awkward sex.
Wes woke up the next morning and destroyed the USB with Sam’s phone information. He couldn’t have anything that linked them to the Keating house. Rebecca was mad that everything they did was all for nothing.
Laurel went to Frank and told her that she stole Asher’s trophy. Frank (Charlie Weber) thought she was overreacting to something so little. The next day, he told the group it was found on Annalise’s porch.
Michaela still hadn’t found her ring by the end of the night. However, she knew she needed to hold onto her fiancé. She went to her mother-in-law to apologize and gave her the signed prenuptial agreement.
Connor went to his ex and told him that he messed up. Oliver (Conrad Ricamora) asked him to explain everything. Connor took a shower and told Oliver that he was high. He claimed he tried new drugs—despite telling Oliver that he didn’t do drugs—and said he had an addiction. Then he left for Annalise’s house, leaving behind a very confused ex.
Annalise called everyone in the next day. She tearfully told the group that the police were going to question them. She told them of Sam’s affair with Lila.
“I need you to be as honest with them as possible,” Annalise said. “Will you do that for me?”
“Of course,” Wes said.
Then “How To Get Away With Murder” flashed back to Wes taking the trophy again. He apologized to Sam’s body. “I’m so sorry,” he said.
“Don’t be,” Annalise said. She was sitting at her desk. She had been back to her house well before the group took the body. Annalise knew her husband was dead.
“How To Get Away With Murder” will return to ABC in January after a hiatus. How did Annalise influence Wes’ decisions? Did she tell him to take the body? Share your theories in the comments section below!
