Idris Elba Takes A Break From Acting To Focus On Music
British actor Idris Elba will not be on the big screen for at least a year, as he wants to pursue a music career.
The 40-year-old actor expressed his passion for making music, telling The London Evening Standard, “This year, I’m not going to work as an actor and I’m going to put my mind into music. It’s a progression thing with me.
I want to make music but I don’t want to shove it down people’s throats. People are just barely getting to know me as an actor. But I do it from the heart, I’m not doing it for money — I just enjoy doing it.”
Elba currently DJs under the name Driis.
Elba revealed that he has already been working with some of the top artists in the music industry.
“I’ve done stuff with Jay-Z on his album ‘American Gangster,’ so there’s bits and pieces that I’m just going to keep moving forward with.”
Last month, Elba covered GQ magazine’s British version, and discussed his label as a sex symbol, female fans and James Bond.
When asked about being seen as sexy, Elba replied, “The irony is I wake up every morning, look at myself in the mirror and think,’“Woah, I look like a piece of [expletive].’”
“You watch yourself age and it’s hard to feel like a sex symbol.”
Though he may not see his appeal, in 2011, People magazine names him one of the “Sexiest Men Alive.”
Elba also addressed James Bond rumors, as it is speculated that he may play Bond in an upcoming film with the franchise.
“It’s a rumor. And, I have to tell you, if the producers of Bond thought that I was self-campaigning, it would be such a turn-off. I’m flattered, obviously but I’ve been advised to just pipe down about it.”
“Apparently, Daniel Craig said I’d be a great Bond. Daniel, why did you say that? Dropped me right in it! What an honor it would be, but also, what an indication of change. I know Ian Fleming [James Bond creator] lived in Jamaica for a long time, didn’t he? I think it’s interesting to think what he would have made of a black man playing Bond.”
