KEY POINTS

  • Jason Momoa was always away from his wife, Lisa Bonet, because of his work
  • The "Cosby Show" star was not interested in joining Momoa on every project
  • Both struggled to be away from each other, and distance took a toll on their marriage

Jason Momoa and Lisa Bonet's relationship was amazing, but it changed over time.

Momoa and Bonet shocked their fans when they announced that they were getting a divorce last week. However, according to an insider, their split didn't happen overnight.

The two were "amazing for years, until they no longer were," an unnamed source told People before adding, "They have grown apart because of different focuses."

Their career trajectories were among the things that have taken them apart, noted the tipster.

"A few years ago, Jason was struggling to find work. Now his career is booming. And he wants to keep working as much as he can," the insider continued.

Momoa is currently at the peak of his career. He recently starred in "Dune" and filmed the "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom" in the U.K. in the previous months. Due to his booming career, he had to be away from home, and Bonet "had no interest in joining" him "on every location."

The "Cosby Show" star "enjoys her life in L.A." Unfortunately, being away from each other had been difficult for both of them, and distance eventually took a toll on their marriage.

"For some people, it might strengthen their marriage. For Lisa and Jason's marriage, being apart has been a disaster," the source added.

As for their separation, the source said both were "mature" about it, and they "will keep the peace" moving forward. They will not go to the "scandalous divorce" route and trash each other because "they are both very spiritual and believe in a higher power."

Momoa and Bonet share two children — son Nakoa-Wolf, 13, and daughter Lola, 14.

Last year, Momoa flew to the U.K. to film "Aquaman 2." While away from Bonet for months before their divorce announcement, the "Justice League" actor appeared "happy and very chilled." There was no hint that he was going through a marital crisis.

Meanwhile, Bonet may have hinted about their split when she interviewed Marisa Tomei for Interview magazine last month.

"Definitely learning how to be authentically me, learning to be new, and following this invitation from the universe to step into this river of uncertainty," Bonet said when Tomei asked her what was "calling" her.

Momoa and Bonet released a joint statement announcing their split on his Instagram last Wednesday. "We have all felt the squeeze and changes of these transformational times… A revolution is unfolding and our family is of no exception," they said.

"We are parting ways in marriage," the exes wrote, adding that they decided to share the news "so that as we go about our lives we may do so with dignity and honesty."
