- This will be Lawrence's first movie with McKay
Jennifer Lawrence is all set to star in the upcoming Netflix movie “Don’t Look Up,” a comedy that will be helmed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Adam McKay.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the 29-year-old actress will be portraying the role of an astronaut in the movie that will follow the lives of two astronauts who will take off on a media tour to warn the earthlings about an asteroid that will destroy Earth. Things will then take a different turn when everybody refuses to believe them.
The movie is really important for the “Silver Linings Playbook” star since both of her recent films, “Red Sparrow” (2018) and “X Men: Dark Phoenix” (2019) bombed at the box office and were panned by the critics as well.
McKay, the director of films like “Vice” and “The Big Short,” issued a statement on the collaboration with Lawrence and noted that he is beyond excited and “thrilled” to work with one of the best actors of this generation.
He also expressed gratitude towards Netflix for believing in his work and setting the bar high in an “exciting” way.
“She [Lawrence] is what folks in the 17th century used to call ‘a dynamite talent.’ And fact that Netflix sees this movie as a worldwide comedy sets the bar high for me and my team in an exciting and motivating way,” McKay said.
The principal photography is all set to begin in April and the streaming giant is thinking of releasing the movie later this year.
Scott Stuber, the head of Netflix’s film department, welcomed McKay to Netflix and praised the kind of filmmaking he does. “Adam has always had great timing when it comes to making smart, relevant and irreverent films that depict our culture. Even if he somehow ends up predicting planet Earth’s imminent demise, we’re excited to add this to our slate before it all comes to an end,” Stuber said.
McKay is currently busy working with Bong Joon-Ho for the serialized version of “Parasite,” the South Korean dark comedy that won four Academy Awards earlier this year. McKay’s recent film “Vice” was nominated for eight Oscars while “The Big Short” won the Academy Award for Adapted Screenplay.
Meanwhile, Lawrence will be seen next in the “Untitled Lila Neugebauer Project” alongside Brian Tyree Henry. The movie is scheduled to hit theaters in 2020.
