Joe Biden Inauguration: Biggest Fashion Moments From Michelle Obama To Bernie Sanders
Inauguration Day 2021 was notable for so many reasons—marking the first time a woman was sworn in as Vice-President, the first time the ceremony had far less pomp and circumstance due to a pandemic and heightened security concerns and the first in over 150 years where the predecessor refused to attend the festivities. Of course, it was also notable for another big reason as well—the impeccable fashion which took center stage.
From the belts to the dresses, coats, and yes, even the mittens, here are the moments everyone talked about.
Jill Biden’s Blue Dress And Coat
The new First Lady made a statement with the ocean blue-hued coat and dress she wore for her husband’s inauguration and her first official day in her new role. While it not only highlighted a lesser-known American designer, it was also seen as a potentially subtle dig to Trump.
Jennifer Lopez’s White Ensemble
J. Lo is no stranger to iconic fashion, and her all-white ensemble for performing “America the Beautiful” and “This Land Is Your Land” didn’t disappoint. The Chanel outfit featured a ruffled silk blouse, floor-length tweed coat, pearl earrings, bracelet and belt, and sequined wide-leg pants.
Michelle Obama’s Belt
Michelle Obama was known for her fashion icon status (among other things) during her time as First Lady, and she reminded everyone of that when she and her husband, former President Barack Obama arrived at the Capitol. Not only did her all-purple ensemble turn heads because it seemed to go with a common theme that was also shared by Hillary Clinton and Kamala Harris, but her statement gold belt also stole the show.
Ella Emhoff’s Coat
Vice President Harris’ stepdaughter showed that she is putting her education at Parsons School of Design to good use when she stood out amongst the sea of monochromatic jewel-tones clothes with a beige plaid coat, which Pop Sugar revealed is the Miu Miu Shetland Pied De Poule coat, which also features copper and gold crystal embellishments on the shoulders. She also perfectly paired it with a leather headband and gloves, black boots and handbag, as well as a black face mask, hinting that when large events such as Presidential balls can resume, she will likely be the talk of the fashion world when she shows up at events.
Lady Gaga’s Dress
When arriving to sing the National Anthem, Lady Gaga once again turned heads for her bold choice of ensemble. Billboard reports she sported a Schiaparelli Haute Couture look featuring a navy cashmere fitted jacket, voluminous red silk faille skirt, and a gilded dove of peace brooch. It also led to many comparisons on social media to “The Hunger Games.”
Bernie Sanders’ Mittens and Parka
The Vermont Senator isn’t known for being as fashionable as others in politics with tailored suits by high-end designers, and true to the vibe he has always given off, he came in full “grandpa” vibe gear, including his tan winter parks from Burton that he’s worn before, as well as his handmade mittens that he was gifted by a Vermont teacher two years ago. The look was praised because it was sensible in the cold temperatures, and the mittens especially, which were made from repurposed wool sweaters and lined with fleece made from recycled plastic bottles, had people talking.
