KEY POINTS

- The actor filed a libel case against The Sun and Dan Wootton
- The publication called Johnny Depp a wife beater
Johnny Depp has been asked to disclose all of the audio recordings he has of him and Amber Heard as part of his ongoing libel case against a British tabloid newspaper.
The “Pirates of the Caribbean” star filed a case against The Sun and its executive editor, Dan Wootton after they claimed that he was violent and abusive towards his ex-wife, Heard. The publication also referred to Depp as a “wife-beater.”
During last week’s hearing, Depp’s lawyers asked Mr. Justice Nicol to rule a number of matters on dispute including to issues in relation to the disclosure of Depp’s text messages. The judge ordered the actor to make further disclosure, which is part of the handing over of evidence before a trial.
Depp’s lawyers told the court last week that the recordings include statements made by Heard appearing to discuss her violent tendencies towards her ex-husband.
David Sherborne, who is representing Depp, said that the evidence demonstrates that Heard is the one who physically abused the actor and not the other way around. The “Aquaman” star also told her ex-husband that no one would believe him if he says that he’s a victim of domestic violence.
According to The Guardian, the judge also asked Depp to disclose documents from their divorce proceedings. The actor also needs to provide more details to show what steps he had taken to obtain his medical records.
Last month, lawyers for NGN said that the texts sent by Depp during his relationship with Heard were very damaging to his case. The company, who he parted with in February, accidentally released 70,000 text messages where Depp threatened to burn and drown Heard.
Depp is also suing NGN for publishing a story about him where they seemingly suggested that he was guilty of overwhelming evidence of physically abusing Heard. However, the actor and his lawyers have been adamant at saying that this isn’t the truth.
