‘Justice League’ Spoilers: Jason Momoa Reveals Why Aquaman Does Not Have Trident
The weapon of choice of Aquaman (Jason Momoa) is the trident, but in the upcoming “Justice League” movie, the ruler of the seven seas does not really own one.
In the trailer, eagle-eyed fans saw Momoa wield something that looked like a trident. However, the actor would like to make some clarifications.
“I didn’t call it a trident,” Momoa told WSVN-TV Miami's Chris Van Vliet. “It’s a quindent. We don’t call it that in the movie and when you watch ‘Aquaman' you're going to see him go for the trident, so everyone’s just got to stay tuned for a hot minute.”
Momoa said that his weapon in “Justice League” is actually borrowed from Mera (Amber Heard). “He's not the king yet,” Momoa explained. “He looks to Mera and he goes, ‘I need to borrow something. I need you to do me a favor.’ So that’s when she gives him the equipment.”
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Momoa said that Aquaman does not really want to join the Justice League since he is “a devil’s advocate, more of a reluctant hero.” He added, “I’m kind of the one who doubts everything.”
As to the looks of his character, Momoa said they tried to remain true to the comic books while giving a fresh spin off their own. “We’re definitely trying to honor the comics,” he explained. “Polynesian people, obviously, we have tons of water gods. It’s kind of a neat thing that there’s a brown-skinned superhero.”
When director Zack Snyder was creating the character, Momoa said that he wanted to create an “outsider” - someone who feels out of place wherever he goes.
“He wasn’t really accepted on land, and not really accepted in Atlantis. That was kind of an interesting thing for me with this character. I could relate to it, coming from Iowa and being Hawaiian. I grew up in Iowa, it’s a great place. But I’m born in Hawaii. Half my family’s in Iowa, half my family’s in Hawaii. Not being fully accepted in either, I can definitely relate,” he shared.
“Justice League” will hit theaters on Nov. 17.
