Kate Middleton has zero power over Meghan Markle even if she is the future queen.

One netizen turned to Quora and asked if Middleton will still let Markle act the way she currently does when she becomes the new queen. According to Melodie Neal, Middleton will only become a queen consort unlike Queen Elizabeth II who is a queen regnant, and Middleton’s future role doesn’t give her any power like the monarch.

“The Duchess of Cambridge, Catherine, will never be queen regnant. I understand that this is a difficult concept for people who have been raised on the Disney concept of ‘princess’, but this is the way it works in the real world. The Duchess of Cambridge will - in the fullness of time - become queen consort. She will have exactly zero ‘power’ over anyone,” she wrote.

Gwendolyn Hendrix McGregor Scherer, a former professor, shared the same opinion as Neal. According to her, Prince William’s wife will have no authority to modify or redress actions on the part of Markle. If someone has the power to do that, it will be Prince William when he takes over the throne. Middleton’s title as future queen consort just basically means that she is the “wife of the king” and nothing else.

Scherer explained that a queen consort is not the head of state and does not have any power unless the king or another law provides her. On the other hand, a queen regnant is someone who is a queen in her own right just like Queen Elizabeth II. She has the power of a monarch. She becomes queen by inheriting the throne upon the death of a previous monarch.

Dianne Timpson also believed that Middleton has no power over Markle when she becomes queen. However, she provides a different reason for this.

According to her, by the time Prince William is crowned, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge would have been together for decades as husband and wife and their children would have taken on official roles and more likely would be the center of attention when the time comes. Also, by that time, Prince Harry and Markle “would have faded into the background as did Princess Margaret and her children.”

However, she believes that as queen consort, Middleton will have an enormous influence in family matters. She added that it would be unreasonable to think otherwise.
