Prince Harry’s birth marked a shift in Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s marriage.

The Prince and Princess of Wales had a fairytale-like royal wedding, but their marriage was unhappy. According to Princess Diana’s former butler Paul Burrell, there was a main difference between the two royal couples. Princess Diana and Prince Charles didn’t have love unlike Prince Harry and Markle.

He also recalled the quality of relationship Prince Charles and Princess Diana had. According to him, the future king and his first wife had a great relationship but that changed when Prince Harry was born.

“Burrell claims Princess Diana and Prince Charles were ‘very, very close to each other’ up until Diana gave birth to Harry, which marked a shift,” Nine.com.au reported.

Princess Diana shared the same story to biographer Andrew Morton. She admitted that she did not like Prince Charles’ comment after learning that they were having another boy. Princess Diana knew all along the gender of their second child. However, she kept it a secret because she knew that Prince Charles wanted to have a girl.

The future king reportedly said that he was only joking, but Prince Diana was so hurt and disappointed with her husband’s reaction that she told Morton “something inside [her] closed off” after hearing Prince Charles’ reaction. Due to this, Morton said that Prince Harry’s arrival triggered his parents’ rocky marriage.

Royal author Katie Nicholl also revealed that Prince Harry was born in an “unhappy marriage.” According to her, the Prince and Prince of Wales’ relationship was already not okay when they welcomed their second son.

“By the time Prince Harry was born in 1984, he was born into an unhappy marriage. I think Diana very much hoped that he would be the band-aid to keep the marriage together, but it wasn’t to be,” Nicholl said.

Nicholl also said that there was a time when Princess Charles and Princess Diana were very happy. It happened after Prince William was born, but it did not last long and their marriage was already on the rocks when Prince Harry arrived.
