Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle’s relationship has been compared to Princess Diana and Sarah Ferguson's friendship.
The Duchess of Cambridge and Duchess of Sussex have been pitted against each other even before the latter became an official member of the royal family. The two made a few joint engagements together and they have been compared to the late Princess of Wales and Duchess of York in terms of the relationship they share.
In 2018, Middleton and Markle attended Wimbledon together. It was their first solo outing sans their husbands Prince William and Prince Harry, respectively. Meanwhile, Princess Diana and Ferguson were spotted making several appearances and even vacations together because they knew each other growing up.
“The relationship between Diana and Sarah was complicated, as you would expect from people who had known each other for almost all of their lives,” royal author Nigel Cawthorne told Insider.
“Meghan and Kate have known one another for a relatively short period of time. Though they both clearly adore their husbands, they are hugely different people.”
Also, Ferguson’s arrival in the royal family made things much easier for Princess Diana. Many felt that they were best friends. In fact, it was Princess Diana who set up the Duke and Duchess of York, so she was thrilled when they got married.
Middleton and Markle don’t share the same story but during Prince Harry and Markle’s engagement interview, she said that the royals were great and they made her feel that she’s not just part of the institution but part of the family.
Just like Middleton and Markle, Ferguson and Princess Diana were also often compared. However, according to the expert, they remain supportive to each other.
“In the hot house atmosphere of the royal family they [Diana and Ferguson] were competitive but also, ultimately, supportive of one another as the in-laws faced with similar issues,” Cawthorne added.
Meanwhile, Ferguson confessed that she had a falling-out with Princess Diana. In fact, they were not on speaking terms when the latter died in a tragic car accident.
On the other hand, there are rumors that Middleton and Markle don’t get along well with each other. However, according to royal correspondent Chris Ship, the issue was just between their husbands.
“There is undoubtedly a mutual recognition that their position as royal wives is unique, but without long years of friendship and trust it is hard to see how a close friendship can thrive in the current crisis,” Ship said of Middleton and Markle’s friendship.
Meanwhile, Ferguson had tried to reach out to Princess Diana and even wrote her letters in an attempt to sort out their friendship. Prince William and Prince Harry’s mom was reportedly planning to rekindle their friendship the day before she died by telling a friend she wanted to talk to Ferguson. Unfortunately, it never happened due to the fatal car crash.
