Christmas Day for many is spent with plenty of alcohol, but by now, Prince William and Kate Middleton know that the royal family is much stricter. While there’s plenty of liquor at Sandringham, the royals can’t help themselves whenever they’d like.

Princess Diana’s former butler Paul Burrell revealed that even the drinks are scheduled during the Queen’s Christmas celebration. “The drinks trolley only appears before lunch, before and after dinner, you can’t just help yourself,” he told the Daily Mail. “Only fine wines are allowed at the table, not off it. It’s a very regimented house.”

Burrell added that he never saw anyone totally drunk, but the royal family can get rather “merry” during the holidays.

As previously reported, drinking doesn’t start until lunch after the church service. Before lunch, Queen Elizabeth II will have a gin and Dubonnet while Philip has a beer. Their guests, which include Kate and William as well as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, will be offered champagne.

Should the rumors of feuds between William and Harry or Meghan and Kate be true, they’ll also be expected to put aside any ill feelings. They’ll make polite small talk and possibly even play games like charades or bridge together.
