Kate Middleton and Prince William reportedly helped revive a historic British sport by doing one simple thing.

James Bickerton, a journalist for Express, said that the sport called bandy died out in the United Kingdom after World War I when many of the original players were killed. The sport was later on replaced by hockey.

But the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge helped revive it when they played bandy and met with the players during their visit to Sweden last year. During their official engagement, Prince William asked if it would be possible to create a British national team for the sport.

And at this year’s championship, held at Vanersborg in Sweden, the British team won six out of the seven games. They also came in second in the second tier.

Just like ice hockey, bandy is played by two teams of skaters who compete to move an object into the opponent’s goal using sticks, but the pitch is significantly bigger and each team has 11 members playing at one time.

Reverend Lyn Gibb-de Swarte, the current president of the Great Britain Bandy Federation (GBBF), told Express that bandy is the game of her dreams. She also said that she saw the sport as an ideal game for anyone to play at any level.

“On finding out that the listed English bandy association was just one person who liked the game, but had never skated, I decided to join him and resurrect the sport for skaters in Britain. I contacted the Federation of International Bandy and asked them to help me set up bandy properly,” she said.

In related news, Prince William and Middleton also made headlines today after they visited V&A Dundee. According to People, Scotland is an important place for the royal couple because this is where they first fell in love. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge also went to Dundee in 2015 where they had a talk with young people about mental health.
