Kate Middleton Will Be Queen Consort Instead Of Queen For This Reason
Kate Middleton may one day become queen consort, but she will never be called queen.
Caitlyn Fitzpatrick, a journalist for Pop Sugar, said that this because Middleton is not a royal by blood. Rather, she became a royal after marrying Prince William. When Prince William becomes king one day, Middleton will automatically be queen consort because she is his wife.
Only female royals who are members of the British family by blood may be called queen when their husbands become king. As such, a similar thing will happen to Camilla Parker Bowles when Prince Charles takes over the throne from Queen Elizabeth II.
Bowles doesn’t have royal blood, but she became the Duchess of Cornwall because of her husband. When Prince Charles becomes king, she will be referred to as queen consort and not as queen.
Pavlos Eleftheriadis, a law professor at Oxford University, said that the title of queen consort will be given to Bowles because of the Treason Act 1351.
“Camilla will be a Queen in the limited legal sense of being the wife of the sovereign, or Queen Consort. She cannot be forced to be called ‘Queen Consort’ but her role as the wife of the King is, by definition, that of Queen. This is, however, a very limited role, which need not involve the use of the title Queen. It is clear that Camilla is the wife of Prince Charles, the future sovereign. The civil ceremony was valid,” he told Express.
“The wife of a head of state is not a joint head of state, however. The Sovereign reigns on his or her own. In that sense Camilla will be a Queen in the limited legal sense of being the wife of the sovereign,” he added.
But it is important to note that Bowles and Middleton won’t be given the title of queen consort or queen unless their respective partners have taken over the throne. At present, the Queen is still the reigning monarch at her age of 92.
