Kim Kardashian's "Saturday Night Live" hosting gig has received criticism from a member of Nicole Brown Simpson's family, a report says.
Nicole's sister Tanya Brown, 50, took issue with the reality star's jokes about O.J. Simpson, who was acquitted of two counts of murder in the 1994 fatal stabbings of his ex-wife Nicole and Ron Goldman, TMZ reported.
After Saturday's episode aired, Tanya told the outlet that she found the jokes about her sibling's murder in Kardashian's "SNL" opening monologue "distasteful" and "beyond inappropriate and insensitive."
Tanya also said that the remarks about Nicole's case were in "poor taste" and that her sister's death should not be portrayed as a joke, the report said. According to the outlet, Tanya is now questioning how much the Kardashian-Jenner family cared about her late sister.
Tanya reportedly believed that Kardashian, whose mom Kris Jenner was a close friend of Nicole's, should have pushed back or refused to do the jokes, assuming that it was "SNL's" writers who came up with them.
Tanya told TMZ that she once stormed out of a scheduled appearance on "The Meredith Vieira Show" when she was informed, at the last minute, that jurors from the murder trial would also be on the show.
Nicole, aged 35, was killed outside her home in Brentwood, Los Angeles, in June 1994, along with her friend, 25-year-old restaurant waiter Goldman.
Simpson became the chief suspect in his ex-wife's murder due to overwhelming evidence against him and a prior record of domestic abuse toward her. He was acquitted of all charges in October 1995.
The Kardashians have said publicly that the case drove a wedge between their parents at the time, Page Six noted. When the former NFL player was on trial for Nicole's murder, Jenner sat on the side of the Brown family, while Kim's father, attorney Robert Kardashian, was on Simpson's defense team.
During her opening monologue Saturday, however, Kim said, "My father was and still is such an influence and inspiration to him. I credit him for really opening up my eyes to racial injustice. It's because of him that I met my first Black person. Want to take a stab in the dark at who it was?"
She continued, "I know it's sort of weird to remember the first Black person you met, but O.J. does leave a mark or several or none at all. I still don't know."
Kardashian received praise on social media for her "SNL" monologue, with some calling it "fearless."
However, a number of viewers were not impressed with some of her jokes, including author Don Winslow, who tweeted, "Can the press who praised Kim Kardashian's SNL monologue which made multiple jokes about Nicole Brown’s repeated beatings by OJ Simpson and her horrific and violent death (she joked about both) take a minute and post photos of Nicole's repeated injuries? It’s not f–king funny."
