Apple announced Wednesday that its driver’s license feature for "digital ID" is now officially secured for some states. This will allow users to use their iPhone or Apple Watch as proof of ID at security checkpoints in participating airports.

States that are currently in the process of working to have the feature first are Arizona and Georgia, with Connecticut, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Oklahoma and Utah all on deck.

“The addition of driver’s licenses and state IDs to Apple Wallet is an important step in our vision of replacing the physical wallet with a secure and easy-to-use mobile wallet,” said Jennifer Bailey, Apple’s vice president of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet in a press release.

Apple did not specify exact dates, but ID services are expected to be available this fall through a software update.

“Participating states and the TSA will share more information at a later date about when support for mobile driver’s licenses and state IDs in Wallet will be available in each state, and which TSA airport security checkpoints and select lanes it will be available at first,” the press release explained.

Users who wish to add their ID to their phone will need to scan the ID and then complete a usual facial ID screening to confirm their identity. When using the feature at a Transportation Security Administration checkpoint, they would also complete a Face ID or Touch ID verification in front of an agent to further prove their identity.

“This new and innovative mobile driver’s license and state ID initiative with Apple and states around the country will enable a more seamless airport security screening experience for travelers,” said David Pekoske, TSA administrator, in the press release. “This initiative marks a major milestone by TSA to provide an additional level of convenience for the traveler by enabling more opportunities for touchless TSA airport security screening.”

Apple says that all identity information stored in the iPhone will be “encrypted and protected against tampering and theft,” and only the owner will be able to view it.

The feature was first discussed at the Worldwide Developers Conference in June when Apple revealed that it was in the development process for the technology with the TSA, according to CNBC.

“We are excited that the TSA and so many states are already on board to help bring this to life for travelers across the country using only their iPhone and Apple Watch, and we are already in discussions with many more states as we’re working to offer this nationwide in the future,” said Bailey.
