A man beheaded his nephew for allegedly having an illicit relationship with his wife. The incident took place in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh on Saturday.

Police said the accused, identified as Jagat Singh Yadav, attacked his nephew, 20-year-old Avdhesh Yadav, while he was asleep in the dairy farm. The accused continued to attack the victim with a sharp object until his head was severed. Satyaveer Yadav, the victim’s cousin who was also at the crime scene, sustained minor injuries. Jagat, who remained at large, was charged with murder and attempt to murder.

“According to complaint, the assault was the result of the of the victim’s illicit relationship with the accused’s wife. The accused is absconding, but we will arrest him soon,” police told local daily the Times of India.

While the victim’s body was sent for autopsy, Satyaveer was getting treated at a local hospital. Speaking to the daily Monday, he said, “Jagat attacked Avdhesh repeatedly and then he attacked me. I received injuries on my arm.”

In a similar incident in New Delhi earlier this month, a man killed his relative on suspicion of him having an affair with his wife. Police said they responded to the scene after receiving information that a man had died of electrocution. Upon arrival, Noshad Alam said he was returning from the ground floor when he found Shakeel Ahmed lying motionless on the floor. He claimed that the victim suffered an electric shock.

However, an autopsy revealed that the victim had died of skull injuries. During interrogation, Alam confessed to killing Ahmed on suspicion of the victim having a relationship with his wife. He was taken into custody and charged with murder.
