A man in Hong Kong killed his girlfriend by stabbing her 33 times inside a bus after the woman broke up with him. He was found guilty Tuesday.
The incident happened on Sep. 16, 2017. Ng Yan-kin told a court that he killed his girlfriend, Annie Li Sin-heng, with a newly bought knife while traveling on the upper deck of a bus, reported local news outlet The Standard.
Yan-kin had told the court that he suffered from a depressive disorder and paranoid personality disorder during the incident. His lawyers urged the court to reduce the charges to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility as these conditions impaired his mental responsibility, the South China Morning Post reported.
The couple met online and started dating in 2016. They reportedly recorded their sexual activities.
Yan-kin was possessive toward his girlfriend. He grew "jealous" and worried when Sin-heng interacted with other men. The couple got into an argument when Sin-heng decided to attend an orientation camp at a university to continue her studies. Yan-kin admitted in court that he had anxiety over being abandoned and had a habit of checking on his girlfriend.
After repeated arguments, Sin-heng decided to break up with him. She also demanded him to return the memory cards with the records.
Sin-heng texted him on the day of the murder and asked him not to meet up again. Yan-kin had told the court that he felt abandoned and the journey to meet her that day was the last thing he remembers.
Security footage from a shopping mall from where he purchased the knife was provided as evidence in the court. Another footage from inside the bus showed him taking the knife out of his backpack and stabbing the woman multiple times. She had 33 stab wounds on the neck, arms and torso. Yan-kin stabbed himself in the stomach before he jumped out of the side window.
Emergency officials found Yan-kin lying on the pavement and Sin-heng in a pool of blood on the seat. She was declared dead at the hospital.
Yan-kin's sentencing will be on Jan. 14, 2021. The court allowed time for the defense to present a plea in mitigation.
