A woman who just wanted to surprise her husband with breakfast in bed has been hospitalized for severe burns after her spouse threw scalding water at her.

The woman, identified as 23-year-old Rukiye Ay, decided to surprise her husband of five years by bringing him breakfast in bed on the morning of Jan. 9 at their home in Konya, Turkey. But when she woke up her husband, he became furious and started yelling at her, saying he wanted to sleep some more.

"I prepared it all and then went to tell my husband he had breakfast in bed. He was angry and demanded to know why I woke him up, and told me not to bother him, so I started having breakfast with my daughter. He came in, still in a bad mood, and told me he was going to divorce me and gain custody of our daughter no matter what I did," the woman recalled from the hospital bed, Daily Star reported.

The man, identified as 28-year-old Ali Ay, then threw scalding water on her neck. It had allegedly been aimed at her face, but she managed to turn away.

"I ran away and could feel my T-shirt sticking to my skin. He then threw the rest of the boiling water at me and some of it landed on my child's feet and the rest hit me on the hip," the victim added.

According to the victim, she wanted to escape but she passed out due to intense pain. It was only when her husband grabbed her by the hair and dragged her into the bathroom that she found the strength to run to a neighbor's home.

The police were called to the scene and the victim and her toddler daughter were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. Her husband was taken into custody.

The accused was initially released on bail. However, following public fury in the country, the man was arrested again on Thursday.

The victim has since been discharged from the hospital and is getting treated at her relative's home.

"After leaving the hospital, I went to my mother's house. My daughter came to me and saw the wounds on my hand and neck. When she was holding my hand, she saw the wounds and ran away," the victim said as per local news outlet Sabah. (Google translation showed)

"My treatment is going on and I am getting better, but my body will remain scarred," she added.
