Mariah Carey Opens Up About Growing Up In A 'Dysfunctional' Household

Mariah Carey has never shied away from talking about her struggles and how they have impacted her life over the years. In a recent interview, the singer shared some specific details about overcoming the traumatic childhood that made her life absolutely miserable.
Speaking in an interview with CBS This Morning, the Grammy-winning artist revealed that there was a lot of “unrest” in her house when she was young and so she faced a lot of difficulties due to having such a “dysfunctional” family.
The singer also explained that she tried everything to heal herself and keep the child in her alive through all the hardships that she endured during her troubled childhood.
“There was a lot of unrest in my household and I had difficulty with having come from such a dysfunctional family. I needed to heal myself and heal that inner child that I tried to keep alive through all of the dysfunction and mess,” Carey said.
During the interview, the “We Belong Together” hitmaker also recalled the moment when her mother, Patricia Carey, got jealous of her musical career and told her that she should “only hope” that she becomes “half the singer” her mom was.
“It definitely had an effect on me. I don’t even know that she would even remember that. That one statement did live with me for the rest of my life though, so you have to be so careful what you say,” Carey said.
The singer is set to release a memoir called “The Meaning Of Mariah Carey” on Sept. 29.
“This book is composed of my memories, my mishaps, my struggles, my survival, and my songs,” Carey wrote on social media while announcing the book.
There will be an Audible version and Carey is narrating it herself.
Recently, the musician shared that her children help her heal from all the traumas in her life.
“They help to heal me every day. Every time we have a moment that feels real and authentic and genuine and it is them loving unconditionally. My fans have been the only ones that I felt I got unconditional love from,” Carey said during an interview with Oprah Winfrey.
The singer shares 9-year-old twins Moroccan and Monroe with former husband Nick Cannon.
