Meghan Markle usually wears black when she’s out in public to prevent some things from happening.

While speaking with Express, royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams said that wearing monochrome is the Duchess of Sussex’s way of staying out of the limelight. If Prince Harry’s wife wears bright and colorful hues, it is highly likely that she will make headlines for all the wrong reasons.

“Wearing black does two things, it allows the cause that she is supporting and the people she is meeting to be more prominent. It is a safer way to ensure things that want her support will get more prominence,” he said.

According to Fitzwilliams, black is also a safe color and wearing it could mean that more publicity is given to the cause and the people. Last year, the Duchess of Sussex wore a stunning black dress to the gala performance of “Hamilton.”

At that time, the “Suits” alum’s outfit got more attention but the event was really about making a statement, which enhanced the Sussex brand and the musical.

On the contrary, Kate Middleton tends to wear brighter colors whenever she’s out in public. According to the royal expert, despite the differences in color and style preference, the Duchess of Cambridge and the Duchess of Sussex are never in competition with each other.

In fact, they are both style icons in their own way, but they are also totally different. Fitzwilliams said that the difference in their taste and preference may have something to do with their separate roles within the Royal Family.

Several years from now, Middleton will become Queen or Queen Consort when Prince William is crowned as King. Markle, on the other hand, will never sit on the throne because Prince Harry will never become King.

“Kate does wear colored clothes, but they are often mid-length and tailored. She wears rather demure outfits, as she is dressing as the future Queen,” he said.
