Although Meghan Markle and Prince Harry want to become financially independent from the royal family, the Duchess of Sussex struggled to hold back tears during her final day as a working royal.

In January, Harry and Meghan announced their plan to step back from their senior royal roles. Although the 38-year-old and her husband will be able to live more private lives, it was difficult for the former “Suits” star to say goodbye.

Before the couple made their final appearance at the Commonwealth Day service in March, the two attended a meeting with the Association of Commonwealth Universities. At the end of the event, ABC’s royal expert Omid Scobie claimed Meghan broke out in tears over the end of her royal duties.

“Meghan stayed behind after the students left. It was a moment for her to say goodbye to some of the staff that had been so loyal to her for the past year for the last time,” he explained.

“It was emotional. Meghan was really composed throughout the engagement, but this was a moment to be vulnerable amongst familiar faces. It was tough, she was tearful. There were hugs, to say goodbye.”

Although Meghan hasn’t spoken out about her feelings on the royal exit, Scobie revealed Meghan struggled to enjoy her last day.

“For Meghan, this being the end would have really hit home. It would be the last time she would stand in Buckingham Palace as a senior working royal,” he said.

“It was clear in her body language, very real, very emotional, very vulnerable. And so she went from that straight to the Commonwealth Service at Westminster Abbey.”

Scobie claimed Meghan and Prince Harry most likely didn’t feel welcomed when they attended the Commonwealth Day service. “A lot of the family members would have known that they had just finished up their last engagement and that she was flying straight back to Canada afterward,” the royal expert said.

“To not see that warm arm of a family member or some kind of welcome or effort being made really gave us our biggest insight into the dynamics of the Sussexes and the royal family, and how that’s been for the final couple years,” he added.

Meghan’s emotional episode happened before she and Prince Harry reunited with Kate Middleton and Prince William at the Commonwealth Day event. During the encounter, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge barely acknowledged the Sussexes and appeared tense throughout the service.
