Meghan Markle, Prince Harry ‘Politely Decline’ Emmy Invitation For This Reason
Meghan Markle was reportedly asked to attend the Emmys and present an award, but she politely declined the invitation.
James Beal, the US editor of The Sun, said that Prince Harry was also invited to attend television’s most prestigious night with his wife. A source told Beal that Markle’s decision to skip the awards show at the Microsoft Theater may have something to do with her role as a royal.
“We had hoped Meghan would attend as a way of saying goodbye to her ‘Suits’ fans and colleagues. Show executives and NBC had offered Harry and her an invitation to celebrate with the biggest stars around, meet her showbiz friends and even present an honor. But Meghan is not attending,” the source said.
Markle, who starred in the first six seasons of “Suits,” was previously nominated in the Best Drama Supporting Actress category at the Emmy Awards. However, she didn’t bring home the trophy. Last year, the actress bid her acting career goodbye after she got engaged to Prince Harry.
“What’s been really exciting, as we talk about this as the transition out of my career… is that the causes that have been very important to me, I can focus even more energy on. You realize that as you have access or a voice that people are willing to listen to, it comes with a lot of responsibility, which I take seriously,” she said (via Harper's Bazaar).
When asked about her decision to give up her acting career, Markle said that she never saw it as giving anything up.
“I just see it as a change. It’s a new chapter. And keep in mind I’ve been working on my show for seven years. We were very fortunate to have that sort of longevity on a series. For me, once we hit the 100 episode marker, I thought, I have ticked this box and I feel really proud of the work we’ve done there and now it’s time to work as a team with Harry,” she said.
