Meghan Markle's Curtsy Wrong, Kate Middleton Got It Right, Royal Butler Says
Meghan Markle's first curtsy was not right, but Kate Middleton pulled it off.
The "Suits" actress joined her fiancé, Prince Harry, and the rest of the royals in Christmas. During the event, she did her first curtsy to the queen, which according to Grant Harrold, a royal butler, was too low, Daily Mail reported.
Harrold appeared on ITV's "Good Morning Britain" and showed Kate Garraway and Charlotte Hawkins the proper way to curtsy.
"What you should be doing, for a lady, is the right foot behind the left, and then it is a gentle bob," Harrold said. "You keep the hands in because you're not a penguin."
Garraway joked that it's easy to be carried away by flapping the arms. Harrold said that it should be avoided so as not to look like a flightless bird.
While Harrold found Markle's curtsy bobbing too low, he said that the Duchess of Cambridge got it "right." Middleton kept her back straight and slightly bent her knees while the "Horrible Bosses" actress dipped too low and bowed her head.
Markle's mistake is understandable provided that she's still new to the royal family. In fact, Sarah Vine confessed that she also made the same mistake.
"I feel her [Markle] pain because I've made precisely the same hash of a curtsey myself," Vine wrote.
Vine initially thought that curtsy was easy, but she realized that she was wrong. "I thought it would be a breeze. Boy, was I wrong," Vine continued. "It is a move guaranteed to send the unwitting novice off-balance."
According to Vine, doing a vertical lunge in high heels and skirts is painful. In fact, one needs a strong core and thigh to balance.
Meanwhile, Queen Elizabeth II is expected to update the order of precedence in the Royal Household after Prince Harry and Markle's royal wedding. It will then include the list of royals whom Markle has to curtsy.
Markle is expected to bend and bow to Middleton and Prince William. She will also need to curtsy to the princesses born into the royal family, including Princess Anne, Princess Alexandra, and to Prince Andrew's daughters, Beatrice and Eugenie. But there will be a reversal of roles when she is with Prince Harry. Markle will also need to bow to Sophie, the Countess of Wessex, if she is with Prince Edward. Otherwise, it would be unnecessary.
