A Michigan teenager has been accused of torturing and stabbing a 3-year-old girl six times while babysitting her.
Isaac Brant Wilkinson, 18, of Evart was charged on Wednesday with multiple offenses for the gruesome April 19 incident. The charges include first-degree child abuse, torture, assault with intent to murder, assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder, and assault with a dangerous weapon.
Wilkinson was arrested Monday after deputies who responded to an emergency call and found the child suffering several life-threatening stab wounds, Osceola Sheriff’s office said in a news release.
The toddler was rushed to a hospital in Grand Rapids, where she underwent surgery.
Wilkinson allegedly stabbed the toddler with a chef’s knife in front of her 2-year-old sibling, according to 9&10 News. The sheriff’s office said that the incident was isolated and there is no danger to the public.
Osceola County Prosecutor Anthony Badovinac said the victim was stabbed six times during the assault, but wasn't aware of her condition.
“This is just bizarre, there’s no other words to describe it,” Badovinac said. “I have no idea what’s going on in somebody’s mind that causes them to do that.”
As of Thursday, Wilkinson was being held at Osceola County Jail on a $500,000 cash or surety bond. He is scheduled to appear in court for a probable cause conference on April 29, and preliminary examination is scheduled for May 6, Cadillac News reported.
If found guillty of the child abuse, torture and assault with intent to murder charges, Wilkinson faces up to life in prison.
In a similar incident last week, a babysitter was charged with murder for the death of an 8-month-old baby in Missouri. Jennifer Johnson, 44, of Fayette was charged with second-degree murder for the death of the infant. The alleged murder occurred while Johnson was babysitting baby along with two other siblings aged 2 and 3 at their residence on April 17.
The infant was found unresponsive when the parents came back the next day. The child was rushed to the hospital where she was later pronounced dead. Johnson allegedly already knew that the baby had died even before being informed about the infant's death hours later.
