A 17-year-old boy from Michigan fatally shot himself during a game of Russian Roulette, the police said.
In a statement this week, the Burton Police Department announced that the teen, a student of Bentley High School, was found dead at his home in Burton on Oct. 24, adding that it was providing an update due to the huge public interest surrounding the case.
According to the statement, the victim suffered a single self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. "After interviews and the collection of evidence, it was determined that some occupants of the house were playing Russian roulette," the statement said as per NBC News.
Although the victim has not been identified, his school posted a statement on Facebook the following day. "It is with a very heavy heart that I am writing to share with you that we have lost one of our students," Superintendent Kristy Spann wrote, citing that the victim loved football and basketball and often played with his younger sister and brother. "He enjoyed making videos with his older sister and was a great brother."
The investigation into the case took a turn after the police found several stolen items during a search conducted at the home where the teen had been found unresponsive.
According to the police, some of the home's occupants committed several burglaries and thefts. "Some of the stolen items have been recovered and returned to their owners. The detectives working the case have submitted their findings to Genesee County prosecutors on Nov. 18 for consideration of criminal charges," the authorities said.
The officers refused to share additional information in connection to the case, saying it was "very active".
Two years ago, another teen lost his life in a game of Russian roulette with friends in New Jersey. Diquese Young, Homecoming King at Woodrow Wilson, accidentally shot his own head while at a friend's home in Camden. Although he was taken to hospital, he died two days later.
The police charged his two friends, who witnessed the shooting, with aggravated assault and other weapons charges. According to his friends, the trio was taking turns pointing the gun at themselves when tragedy struck.
