A schoolboy in India was allegedly attacked by a group of 16 men with swords and sticks after a girl reportedly made a fake harassment complaint against him.

The boy from Jagraon, a city in the northern Indian state of Punjab, was reportedly assaulted Friday afternoon while he was on his way back from school. The unidentified minor suffered serious injuries to his head and had his finger cut off in the brutal assault. Based on the boy's complaint, the police have registered a case against the 16 suspects, four of whom were identified, including the girl's brother, reported news outlet The Tribune.

The girl, a schoolmate of the boy, had accused him of harassing her a few days before the incident. However, the girl reportedly admitted to the school management that the allegations were fake and the matter was sorted out.

She later went back on her statement and claimed that the boy had harassed her in school, the victim's family said. This reportedly provoked the girl's brother who then decided to teach the boy a lesson and attacked him brutally, as reported by Times Now News.

“They attacked me in front of other students of the school. It was only when residents of the area started gathering, the assailants fled the spot. They left me almost dead. People rushed me to a hospital where I am still undergoing treatment,” the victim said in the police complaint.

The police have started an investigation and are conducting raids to nab the suspects, an investigating officer, Gurinderpal Singh, said.

Earlier this month, a 24-year-old unidentified man from Mumbai, the financial capital of India, who was jailed for two years after his sister accused him of rape, was acquitted. The man was freed of all charges after his sister testified before a court that the allegations she made in the criminal complaint were baseless. The unidentified girl told the court that she made false accusations against her brother because he scolded her for going out with her boyfriend.
