Missing Soldier Gregory Morales Update: Skeletal Remains Found Near Fort Hood, Texas
The skeletal remains found recently in Killeen on Kings Court in Texas belongs to missing soldier Gregory Morales, his mother said Saturday. The remains were found Friday in a field several miles from Fort Hood, after a tip was sent to Army criminal investigators.
"It was a missing soldier. My missing soldier Greg Wedel," his mother, Kim Wedel wrote in an email Saturday to ABC13, addressing him by his former last name of Wedel. The army is yet to confirm the details of the finding.
Kim Wedel said Saturday she learned from police that the remains belonged to her son and was told the investigation into how he died is ongoing.
Gregory Morales was last seen driving his 2018 black KIA Rio outside of the army post on Aug. 19, 2019. He was driving a Black Kia Rio with Texas temporary license tags. The car was later recovered by authorities, according to U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command.
Morales was in the midst of being discharged from the army and the end of his military service was due to be finalized within a couple of days of his disappearance.
Authorities are asking anyone with information about Morales to contact Crime Stoppers at 254-526-TIPS (8477) or submit an online tip via their website.
While an investigation is underway into Morales' cause of death of Morales, a search continues for another soldier who was missing.
Vanessa Guillen, 20, a Houston native stationed at Fort Hood, disappeared in April. Authorities do not believe the two cases are related.
"Guillen was last seen on April 22 at 1 p.m. in the parking lot of her Regimental Engineer Squadron Headquarters, 3rd Cavalry Regiment on Fort Hood. Her car keys, barracks room key, identification card and wallet were later found in the armory room where she was working earlier in the day," said Criminal Investigation Command at the time.
Guillen is described as Hispanic, 5-foot-2-inch and 126 pounds. She has black hair with brown eyes. She was last reportedly seen wearing a black t-shirt.
