Mob Of 20 Men Beat Pregnant Dog To Death With Baseball Bat, Hockey Sticks

A group of 20 men in Delhi, India, brutally beat a pregnant stray dog; a resident reportedly filed a complaint and showed videos as proof.

The police filed a case after a resident of New Friends Colony complained while showing videos of the incident, The Times of India reported.

One video showed the men cornering the dog inside a tin shed. In another clip, the dog got getting dragged across the field of a technical institute in New Friends Colony.

"They committed the heinous crime of maiming and killing a white street dog on the campus by hitting her continuously with a hockey stick and a baseball bat. They dragged her lifeless body on the campus playground in the presence of at least 25 people, all of whom were witnesses to the crime being committed. They conspired together with the common intention to inflict cruelty on the dog and kill her," the complainant stated.

The complainant alleged that the group of men were students and staff members of the institute.

Another video showed some men holding baseball bats, iron rods and sticks. One person could be heard saying, "Faltu mein tadpa raha hai (you are unnecessarily torturing her)," while another yelled, "Kill, kill na man."

A different clip seemingly showed the aftermath of the beating as the dog could be seen lying dead.

The complainant reportedly learned about the videos through an animal welfare group, after which she filed a police complaint. "The video also showed that despite the street dog hiding in the tin shed, the accused were seen looking for her and laughing at her misery, clearly showing the intention and malice behind the heinous act to torture, maim render the dog useless and kill her," she added.

A case has been registered under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 429 (mischief by killing or maiming cattle), 34 (common intention), and Section 11(1) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960.

According to the police, they had not arrested anyone as they were still investigating the reason behind the killing of the pregnant dog.

Last month, during World Animal Day, Humane Society International/India (HSI/India) and People for Animals launched a multi-state billboard campaign demanding an amendment to the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, of 1960. The movement known as #NoMore50 sought an amendment to the outdated law to give more focus on animal cruelty and abuse in the country.

"A community is best able to protect itself when it is able to protect the animals who are a part of it. Research has established the link between violence against animals and violence against humans. A holistic approach to a safer society, for women, for children, includes an effective law protecting animals against cruelty. Through these billboards, we continue to urge the Government of India to table the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals 2022 bill in the upcoming winter session of the Parliament," said Alokparna Sengupta, the managing director of HSI/India.

As of late, the maximum penalty for the most heinous form of animal abuse in India — including stray poisoning dogs, brutally beating them to death, or burning them alive is Rs. 50.
