A 33-year-old Bronx mother was arrested in upstate New York after authorities allegedly found over a pound of cocaine hidden in her baby's diaper bag during a traffic stop earlier this week, police said.
Shante Pleasant was traveling with her 13-year-old and 7-month-old daughters when her vehicle was stopped by state police on Interstate 87 in the town of Coxsackie just before noon Tuesday for a vehicle and traffic violation, the New York State Police said in a statement released Thursday.
A preliminary investigation found that Pleasant allegedly did not possess a valid driver's license, according to police. State troopers then searched Pleasant's 2008 Dodge Charger, which would later be towed, and allegedly discovered approximately 718.5 grams (1.58 pounds) of cocaine hidden inside her baby's diaper bag.
Pleasant was taken into custody, transported and processed at SP Albany, where she was charged with felony first-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell, according to the police statement.
Additionally, Pleasant was charged with two misdemeanor counts of endangering the welfare of a child, police said.
Pleasant and her daughters were transported to the Town of Coxsackie Court, where the children were turned over to a relative. The mother was arraigned and subsequently remanded to the Greene County Jail.
Pleasant was scheduled to appear in court Thursday for her preliminary hearing.
A similar incident occurred in Warren, Ohio, nearly two years ago when a couple was arrested after police allegedly found drugs in their baby's diapers during a traffic stop.
La’Quisha Dukes, 27, and Chayon Breckenridge, 31, were both charged with endangering children, with the latter also being charged with tampering with evidence.
Police had pulled the two over on Aug. 28, 2019, while two children — including a baby — were in the backseat of their vehicle.
Officers believed something was hidden in the car due to the couple's behavior, which prompted police to have Dukes change the baby's diaper. The woman allegedly pulled out a bindle containing white powder during the process, police said.
Three more bags were allegedly discovered in the old diaper. One of the bags contained a brown powder, the other had a white substance and the third had a white rock-like substance, police said.
The substances were sent to a laboratory for testing.
