More Sears, Kmart Store Closings As Retail Industry Continues To Feel Pain From Coronavirus Economy
More Sears and Kmart stores are permanently closing their doors as retailers continue to struggle to gain a foothold with consumers.
Reports have indicated that a handful of Sears stores in California, Illinois, New Jersey, Ohio, and Texas are shuttering and more Kmart locations in California, North Dakota, Minnesota, New Hampshire, and Pennsylvania will also be going dark.
Illinois-based Transformco, the parent company of Sears and Kmart, did not publicly disclose which stores it would be closing and has not released a public statement since April 3. The company has been quietly shutting down locations since it acquired the retailer out of bankruptcy in a $5.2 billion deal in 2019.
Sears, which at one time held 3,500 stores under its namesake and Kmart brands, has closed over 3,330 locations over the last 10 years. The company also closed dozens of stores in March and April.
The Commerce Department in mid-April reported that overall retail sales fell 8.7% from March, the largest one-month decline in the nearly three decades the government has tracked data.
The Sears and Kmart stores that are slated to close, according to local reports, include:
