A woman and her daughter were arrested and charged in connection to the fatal stabbing of a man during an argument in Maryland.

Prince George's County Police said 49-year-old Cheryl Wright and 31-year-old Jasmine Wright stabbed 68-year-old Daniel Gregory Thompson around 1.30 a.m. on Oct. 15 at a home on W. Forest Road in Kentland. At the time of the deadly stabbing, investigators said Thompson was in a relationship with Cheryl.

Thompson was rushed to a hospital following the attack, and succumbed to injuries two days later on Oct 17, WUSA9 reported. The reason for the argument was not revealed.

Cheryl was in the custody of the Prince George’s County Department of Corrections, while Jasmine was in the custody of Washington, DC, pending extradition to Prince George’s County, according to the WJLA.

Both mother and daughter have been charged with first- and second-degree murder Monday. More charges may be added, officials said.

A WJLA report found that as of April 2021, Prince George’s County witnessed 44 murders, compared to the 22 from last year.

Deputy Chief Tony Schartner said disputes and arguments have risen considerably compared to the pre-pandemic time. He added the people were turning toward deadly tools to resolve those issues.

"We’ve seen an almost 100% increase in arguments and disputes," Schartner said to WJLA. "We probably won’t know what the true effects of the pandemic is for years to come but certainly it does play a part."

Dr. Joseph Richardson of the University of Maryland, who studies gun violence, said the areas where crime rates are high, distrust of police plays a key role as people take matters into their own hands. The problems are compounded by the high unemployment rate and people spending more time at home. "I definitely think it’s a public health crisis," Richard said to the outlet.

The police urged people with information regarding Thompson's death to call detectives at (301) 516-2512.
