MTV Movie & TV Awards: 9 Behind-The-Scenes Moments You Didn’t See On Air
MTV made history on Sunday by including television for the first time ever at its annual Movie Awards. And while most celebs liked the inclusion of television programs and its stars, the event didn’t go off without a hitch. International Business Times was live at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles for the 2017 festivities. Here are nine things that happened behind-the-scenes that you didn’t see on TV:
Celebs Don’t Like Rain
Well, most of them. And apparently, neither do reporters. An hour after the MTV red carpet opened up, so did the sky and buckets of rain and hail... yes, hail... joined the party. Not even the ponchos MTV gifted the media (safe to say the hottest commodity of the evening) could keep the press event alive. The inclement weather forced hordes of celebrities to skip press opportunities in favor of seeking shelter and honestly, we can’t blame them! What followed was partygoers desperately trying to make themselves presentable again in the bathrooms.
Snacks And Drinks For All
For those lucky enough to be gifted an MTV gold wristband, that meant unlimited free booze, soda, popcorn and candy during the entirety of the event. Celebs and other audience members were presented with dozens of tasty treats to nosh on and several different kinds of wine and liquor, and that was just the beginning.
Continuous Party
Booze and food wasn’t the only way MTV kept the award show feeling like a party. With the help of DJ Nasty, there was never a lapse in entertainment for audience members. During commercial breaks he played today’s hits as well as throwbacks to please the crowd, which, at times, got quite rowdy with some attendees dancing in the aisles.
Hecklers And Lots Of Them
Some audience members got a little too involved in the festivities. It wasn’t uncommon to hear celebrities being heckled while presenting or during their acceptance speeches. Luckily, things never got too out of hand.
The Warm-Up Guy
MTV Movie & TV Award host Adam DeVine wasn’t the person who truly started the party. That honor goes to the man with one name, Napoleon, who kicked off the event by asking the audience to “get crazy.” Unlike other award shows, Napoleon encouraged pictures and videos to be taken during the program, and also asked for crazy amounts of laugher and applause (he advised against “golf claps”) during the opening skit.
And while MTV wanted it to be fun, there were some rules announced. Namely, don’t expect Hugh Jackman to save you in the case of an emergency. “You don’t look for Wolverine or hide behind him,” DeVine’s hype man warned, before adding, “People may be flying all over the place. Things may be catching fire.”
Of course, that’s exactly what went down during the show’s “Beauty and the Beast” inspired opener.
Celebs And Their Phones
MTV wanted audience members to use their phones during the show but some celebs may have taken to that invitation a little too far. While most stars in attendance paid attention to the program (Josh Gad appeared to be enjoying each segment), some were most interested in their mobile devices. Sorry, Rebel Wilson. We love you, but we’re calling you out!
Big Hits
“Stranger Things” actress Millie Bobby Brown received a huge round of applause when she won for best actor in a show, even more so after she got emotional onstage during her acceptance speech. Other crowd-pleasing moments including U.S. congress woman Maxine Waters’s presentation and Taraji P. Henson’s appearance in behalf of the “Hidden Figures” cast for its best fight against the system win.
However, the biggest showstopper was Goldie Hawn, who created quite the buzz when she presented alongside her “Snatched” co-star Amy Schumer. The audience couldn’t contain themselves around the Hollywood legend.
Emma Watson Upset
Watson gave an extended acceptance speech after winning the first award of the night, best actor, for “Beauty and the Beast.” However, when the film also won movie of the year, she wasn’t given the chance to talk. After her co-star Josh Gad joked about the win onstage alongside director Bill Condon, the showrunners quickly went to a commercial break just as Watson started to speak. The grumble from the crowd was audible, but the actress didn’t seem too fazed by the diss. After all, the show was on a tight two-hour schedule.
The Best Seat In The House Is At Home
During the show it was difficult to spot DeVine as he engaged with the crowd, and close-ups of the stars weren’t always projected onscreen during their moments in the spotlight.
Each time a celebrity presented off stage it was because the program was preparing for a bigger segment to come. During those moments there were dozens of stagehands hard at work while those at home remained oblivious. And when the nominee reel played during each award, the audience could see the crew rushing out the MTV trophy and envelope to presenters while viewers at home got to watch the footage interrupted.
Yes, MTV made sure the Movie & TV Awards was enjoyable for its guests, but it’s safe to say the best way to watch the show is from the comfort of your own home.
