National Postal Workers Day: 3 Ways to Appreciate Your Dutiful Mail Carriers
KEY POINTS
- The day encourages people to recognize and appreciate postal workers across the country
- Postal workers endure harsh working conditions to ensure the mail delivery
- Even with the advent of smart technology, the postal service is an essential communication tool
National Postal Workers Day, which falls on July 1 every year is perhaps the perfect time to appreciate all those who work hard to deliver mail every day.
There are about 490,000 postal workers in the country alone. They head out each day to make sure that people receive their mail, even when the weather is harsh. From selling stamps and picking up packages to sorting them out and delivering them to each address, postal workers ensure that mail delivery is uninterrupted, whether it’s summer or winter.
Brief History
For centuries, the postal system has been in the works, beginning in 1639 when the first post office was founded in Boston. The Post Office Department was then formed in 1775 by the Founding Fathers of the U.S.
It was actually Benjamin Franklin who created the postal service system and rightfully served as the first postmaster general.
With their enduring presence and service, it is only fitting that the United States Postal Service (USPS) established the National Postal Workers Day to honor everyone in the postal system.
How To Honor Postal Workers
So, how can people honor postal workers? There are a couple of ways to do this, even through simple gestures.
1. Greet Postal Workers You Come Across This Day
If by chance you see a postal worker this day, be sure to greet them and say, “Thank you.” This is a simple gesture but to someone who tries their best to deliver mail, whatever the weather may be, these two words can boost their morale.
2. Get The Word Out
Not a lot of people know that it’s National Postal Worker Day. Just get the word out by posting something on Facebook or Instagram (any platform really) to remind everyone that this honorary event exists.
3. Send An Email To Say Thanks
You might be one of those people who has sent an email to postal workers to complain about their service. Well, why not send an email to show them your appreciation. Sure, there might have been days that you were discontented with their delivery for some reason. But also remember the other days that your mail was delivered without a hitch.
