NBA: Derrick Rose Reveals How 'Triangle Offense,' Carmelo Anthony Dismantled Knicks
Former New York Knick Derrick Rose came clean about how things went down between him, Carmelo Anthony and the Knicks.
Rose has unveiled what happened to Anthony, Phil Jackson and the rest of the team during his stay with the Knicks in his book titled “I’ll Show You.” In the said book, the 2011 NBA season MVP expressed his true feelings about Jackson and the way the legendary coach “mishandled” the talented Knicks a few years ago.
According to Rose, when he became a Knick, he realized that Anthony is the focal point of the team and nothing could ever change that back then, New York Post noted.
“I could tell right away it wasn’t the season I was expecting. Lot of different priorities. Melo’s there. You know how he plays. Can’t change that. That’s what I realized being there,” Rose recealled.
Rose then mentioned the contributions of (Phil) Jackson. Based on his assessment, Jackson was completely honest with him but their relationship was a bit “weird.” The former Bulls star even revealed that Jackson wanted the money the Knicks owed him.
“I don’t say much, but Phil could tell. Phil was telling me to be patient. He said I had a lot going on with the trial and all. He was honest with me. Everything he talked to me about, he was honest, I’ll say that,” Rose said.
“Our relationship was a little weird, though. He was cool the whole time I was there, but he wanted that $60 million he was owed by the Knicks,” Rose revealed.
In the history of NBA, (Phil) Jackson has been widely known for running and arguably, perfecting the “triangle offense.” However, Rose admitted that his playing style doesn’t really match the said type of play. He also emphasized that Anthony “couldn’t play the triangle” and doesn’t even want to.
“I liked Phil, but, come on, man, you’re still running the triangle? He was still forcing them to run it. I’m a slasher, a driving point guard. The triangle is okay, but not for the personnel we had. Melo couldn’t play that way, didn’t want to,”
More importantly, Rose stated in his own words that Anthony can’t play with a lot of guys and always wanted to be the “main guy.”
“He (Melo) didn’t want to start over so they (Knicks) wanted to get the veterans for him. But he can’t play with a lot of guys, he’s gotta be the main guy,” Rose stated.
Because of Anthony’s attitude and (Phil) Jackson’s insistent “triangle offense” play, Rose witnessed how the Knicks fell apart.
“Phil really didn’t force anything. But as time went on, it converted all the way to the triangle and we played through that almost the whole year. I think deep down [coach Jeff] Hornacek really wanted to play that more up-tempo style. But being a new head coach, having to listen to the front office, it’s hard on that coach to say something,” Rose said.
