The third season of FX’s hit series “American Crime Story” heads into predevelopment with Clive Owen signed on as the lead playing Bill Clinton. Casting for Hillary Clinton is still ongoing, though “American Crime Story” production veterans, such as Ryan Murphy, Brad Simpson, Scott Alexander, and many more will be coming back to bring Clinton’s Presidential impeachment to life.

Described in an exclusive with Deadline, the third season of the show, titled “Impeachment: American Crime Story,” will focus on Clinton’s affair with Monica Lewinsky and the inevitable impeachment proceedings that followed. Lewinsky will even be a producer on the show, alongside Sarah Burgess, who will also be penning the script.

As it so happens, the reveal works into contemporary popular culture, mirroring that of President Donald Trump’s own ongoing impeachment inquiry. Murphy, however, has assured fans of the show that said current events aren’t the mainstay.

He related to Deadline, “We do a show that is very thoroughly fact-checked and vetted and based on best-selling book by Jeffrey Toobin. I think the reason why it’s interesting is because you don’t have to change anything to feel modern. And I think that idea of impeachment obviously with Trump is fascinating. I wouldn’t say that we’re changing things that much or mentioning Trump at all in our narrative.”

Much like that of its first season, “The People v. O.J. Simpson,” “Impeachment” will closely follow historical novelizations, specifically Toobin's “A Vast Conspiracy: The Real Story of the Sex Scandal That Nearly Brought Down a President.” Despite the Versace family calling its second season fiction, "American Crime Story" Season 3 will attempt to draw out the truth as best as possible.

Along with Owen, the “American Crime” cast will include Sarah Paulson as Linda Tripp, Annaleigh Ashford playing Paula Jones, and Beanie Feldstein portraying the one and only Lewinsky.

Due to Murphy’s involvement with Meryl Streep’s “Prom,” filming for the show has been postponed until March.

Both Season 1 and 2 of "American Crime Story" have been nominated and awarded with a plenitude of accolades, including Golden Globes and Emmys. Having been nominated for an Oscar himself for 2004’s “Closer,” Owen struts casually into the Oval Office with fan anticipation ratcheting to an all-time high.

“Impeachment: American Crime Story” is set to premiere on Sept. 27, 2020.
